UFO Diary by Satoshi Kitamura6/12/2023 It shares the relatable tensions of going to a new place and wanting to make friends (even when the potential friends don't speak the same language). Then I knew he was going to be my friend." "There in front of me was a strange blue planet, bright as a glass ball." "On Monday, I took a wrong turn in the Milky Way." Let's say, two dollars, maybe? (I never said I'd bet a lot of money.) I'd be willing to bet money this was done intentionally. The final illustration-I won't give away what it is of-reminded me strongly of one of the sketches in de Saint-Exupery's classic, The Little Prince. The visitor's body is never shown and the reader is always seeing from his/her/its perspective so they can see the familiar world in a new light. The strengths of these illustrations is how completely they're given from the perspective of the alien. The faces the human boy makes when he sees the narrator are humorous and cute (although, the boy is so pale, he looks kinda like a particularly expressive zombie). The dark blues that capture space are beautiful. This makes me wonder if Kitamura and the publisher had trouble picking a name for the book. Instead, this is a first person account in an alien's childlike voice. Show More (or showing) of a diary throughout the story. The beloved daughter by alana terry6/10/2023 No spoilers here – you’ll have to read it yourself. The tension grows as Alana tells both their stories and as the hope for redemption grows.Įven though I thought I was familiar with Alana’s writing the ending still took me by surprise, and left me wanting more. The story switches back and forth between a missionary couple and Mee-Kyong’s lives. Her life doesn’t improve much – just becomes a different nightmare. Her book Slave Again is equally compelling although it takes place after the escape of Mee-Kyong when she is in the Chinese underworld. It opened my eyes to what was happening in the real world – right now! It left me wanting more, even though it was a book about a very difficult topic – life in North Korean prison camps. I was privileged to read her book The Beloved Daughter last December. As you can imagine, this tends to cause problems. For example, he could describe a hand as an object with five long protrusions from it, but he had no idea what he was looking at until someone told him. Although nothing seemed to be wrong with his actual vision, somehow he lost his ability to recognize objects as what they were. This wasn’t just a one-time lapse, though. This is not what your wife should look like… (Don’t worry… he didn’t actually succeed. Super creative, right?Īnyhow, you have to admit it takes either a serious case of absent-mindedness or something at least a little abnormal in your brain to try to pick up your wife’s head and try to put it on like a hat. So, a few years ago, I read a book called “ The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat (and Other Clinical Tales),” (written by a psychologist who detailed his patients’ various disorders) and shockingly, the first story is about… a man who mistook his wife for a hat. So, to start off my psychology blog, I thought I would talk about one of the more… different cases in psychology On Liberty by John Stuart Mill6/10/2023 The first step was easily obtained, but the second step was met with more opposition by governments. This attempt to ensure liberty involved two steps: 1) obtaining political rights that were safe against all forms of tyranny and 2) implementing the safeguard of community consent in the form of a mandate or body that would guard against an abuse of power. As time elapsed however, the citizens began to want an limit to be placed on the power of the government in order to achieve their liberty. In earlier times, liberty was utilized as protection against political tyranny because rulers were endowed with the power to both suppress the rights of would-be aggressors and their own citizenry. Mill begins by explaining that his purpose in this essay is to discuss the maximum power that society can exercise over an individual and study the struggle between Liberty and Authority. |
